MIM industry changes in China

Jun. 20, 2024

The Metal Injection Molding (MIM) industry in China is currently undergoing significant changes driven by multiple factors. The sector is recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted operations and reduced production volumes. One notable shift is the technological advancements in sinter-based metal additive manufacturing, such as metal binder jetting and material extrusion, which are being increasingly adopted within the MIM industry. This integration is expected to enhance the manufacturing process and open new avenues for complex and high-precision components.

Additionally, the industry is experiencing turbulence due to market changes, such as Apple's decision to replace its Lightning connector, a component that significantly utilized MIM parts, thereby affecting demand. This has led to a need for diversification and adaptation within the industry. Despite these challenges, the sector remains robust, with continuous growth in applications across various fields, including automotive, consumer electronics, medical devices, and more.

The Chinese MIM industry is also seeing increased interest in reshoring and localizing production, which is expected to bolster the domestic market. Furthermore, advancements in materials and technology are fostering innovation and improving the quality and capabilities of MIM-produced components
